‘Doctor Who' Stars Explain Why Romance Isn't 'Necessary' In The New Series

So, in case you aren't aware of it by now, I'm a big (okay, huge) fan of "Doctor Who," the BBC series that's one of the longest-running science-fiction programs in television history. This time around, the new "Doctor Who" duo discusses the hot-button issue of romance between The Doctor and his companion. As Is mention in the interview, "Doctor Who" lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has indicated that such romance isn't a recent development in the series, but for the series' stars, it's not a "necessary" development, either.

"I don't think it's completely necessary," said Smith. "I don't think it's a prerequisite of the show."

"If anything, it feels a little tired, that story," the new Doctor added.

"I think so," agreed Gillan.

While the pair's characters have certainly had their moments (including Amy Pond watching The Doctor go through a few wardrobe changes in the season premiere before settling on his new look), there's no telling where Moffat plans to take the time- and space-traveling duo as the season goes on. But if you ask them, it's all about the adventures their characters have together, not the way they feel about each other.

"I don't think that's what it's about," said Smith. "It's about adventure together."

"It's about mates — best friends," said Gillan.

"...Traveling the universe!" added Smith.

And with a full season under their belts and critical praise for the two episodes (or four, if you're in the U.K.) that have already aired, Smith and Gillan could be in store for many more adventures together. But the pair says they're perfectly happy not having their characters become anything more than very, very good friends.

"I think it risks getting a little portentous sometimes when it becomes about romance," said Smith. "If you're 8 [years old], I don't think you want to tune in and see that. You want to see them having mad adventures."

"And I think that's what the new series really touches on — it's about mad adventure," he said.

Doctor Who character gets pregnant

A character in 'Doctor Who' is reportedly set to have a pregnancy storyline in the coming weeks.

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

According to The Mirror, show photographs have displayed Amy, played by Karen Gillan, with a baby bump.

The episode, which is called 'Amy's Choice', will reportedly look five years into Amy and the Doctor's future, but it is not clear who the father of Amy's baby is.

A source said: "Viewers will have to wait and see how the pregnancy came about, but as always with 'Doctor Who', things are not always as they appear."

The episode is due to air on 15 May.

A Great Theory.

I Have recently had this email from a friend:

I have an interesting theory about River Song. I thing she's Prisoner Zero. In The Time of Angels, River and the army father guy have a private talk while in the cave thing and the army guy says, "he doesn't know yet does he? Who and what you are?" (the quote might be slightly wrong) so this implies that she is not human. Army guy also says "If he finds out he won't help us" (again, might be slightly wrong) which indicates that she is something evil, or at least, something that the Doctor thinks is evil at this point. At the end of the conversation River says "I'm not going back to prison" and in every episode so far (counting time of angels two parter as a single episode) there has been one of those time cracks that, in the first episode, was associated with prisoner zero. We already know that prisoner zero is a shape changer.

I have two further ideas. Either:

Prisoner Zero is not actually evil, the doctor just thinks it is hence the "he won't help us" and the fact that he supposedly later marries River. I mean, did Prisoner Zero actually kill someone when it was on earth? As far as I can remember it just put people into comas to use their shapes and threatened to kill people by using the police aliens to incinerate the earth.

I'm not quit sure about this idea though because it would imply that prisoner zero is not actually River but taking her form and keeping her body in a coma somewhere, and the army guy is in on it.

I think I just said my second idea - river being in a coma somewhere and prisoner zero is using her form and the army guy is in on it.

New Doctor Who star Matt Smith trashes BBC set

BUMBLING Doctor Who star Matt Smith is constantly breaking bits of the set during filming, the show’s boss revealed.

The programme’s executive producer, Steven Moffatt, described the young actor as a cross between action hero Indiana Jones and funnyman Stan Laurel.

Viewers will see the result of one of the Midland TV star’s accidents restaged for the cameras in the latest edition of the BBC1 series.

Because of the stagnation of their society Gallifreyans have difficulty handling different cultures.  They have 30 different words to describe culture shock.  The plural of TARDIS is still still debated by Time Lords. 'Doctor Who: The Adventure Games' Trailer Foretells The Dalek Invasion

Time of Angels_ Game Trailer 235

The Doctor has been all over time and space during nearly 50 years of "Doctor Who" on TV. In conjunction with the newest season's launch, though, the BBC have put their latest leading man Matt Smith at the front of a few downloadable games as well. The first trailer for "Doctor Who: The Adventure Games" for PC and Mac shows the Smith incarnation arriving in a bleak version of the 1960s where his alien nemeses the Daleks appear to have totaled civilization.

"Fight the Daleks from your own sitting room" is the trailer's sales pitch. The adventures will reportedly be part of the series cannon and come with the input of the show's writer and executive producer Steven Moffat.

"Children don’t just watch 'Doctor Who' – they join in. They make up games, invent their monsters, create their own stories," Moffat said, according to Kotaku. "Now, there’s something else – now they can be the Doctor in brand new episodes."

Images that have been released also include looks at the Cybermen, so expect to see plenty of classic faces in the games. I haven't seen any indicators as to whether or not the U.S. will have to wait days and weeks to experience the episodes legally after they've been released in the U.K., as they do with the TV series, but I'm hopeful that the launch will be worldwide. The game itself is a bit hard to judge from a YouTube trailer alone, but strong writing could go a long way if they're coordinated with the new season.

Do you want to check out the new "Doctor Who" interactive episodes? Would you rather see them on a different platform? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

Doctor Who star Matt Smith to appear in Sarah Jane Adventures

New Doctor Who Matt Smith is to guest-star in The Sarah Jane Adventures, alongside the Doctor's former companion Jo Grant.

image image image

Jo, played by Katy Manning, will join fellow former sidekick Sarah Jane Smith and the Doctor in two episodes of the new series on CBBC this autumn.

Pin-up Jo was a companion of the third incarnation of the Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee, in the 1970s.

The feisty character fell in love with eco-warrior Professor Clifford Jones and left the Doctor to explore the Amazon with her new fiancé.

Manning caused a stir in real life 30 years ago when she stripped off to pose for pictures with a Dalek.

Smith follows in the footsteps of David Tennant, who also appeared as the Time Lord in the Doctor Who spin-off last year.

Elisabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane, said: ''It's a fantastic script and I can't wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us.

''I've known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her.''

The special edition of the show will be penned by Russell T Davies, who recently handed his Doctor Who writing mantle to Steven Moffat.

Executive producer Nikki Wilson said: ''We are absolutely thrilled to be introducing Sarah Jane and the gang to both the 11th Doctor and Jo Grant, and to have a script penned by Russell T Davies is the icing on the cake!

''Viewers are in for a real treat, with an action-packed story full of Russell's usual wit and warmth, which takes the gang inside a secret base beneath Snowdon and introduces brand-new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth.

''All this, plus a trip to an alien planet - a first for The Sarah Jane Adventures.''

Guest stars are lined up to appear in the series include former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Laila Rouass and David Bradley, who played Argus Filch in Harry Potter, providing the voice of the Shansheeth.

Doctor Who star Matt Smith seen holding hands with Daisy Lowe

  • Matt cuddles up to Lowe

image

Who's a lucky boy then... Just weeks after telling us he was looking for love, Matt Smith has found himself a glamorous new assistant - Daisy Lowe.

image

The Doctor Who star was spotted walking hand in hand with British model Daisy at the Coachella Festival in California at the weekend.

The coy couple had been partying with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Katy Perry, DJ Nick Grimshaw, Agyness Deyn and Paris Hilton. But despite all the eye candy, Matt only had eyes for 21-year-old Daisy.

An onlooker tells us: "Matt looked smitten. He was so attentive to her and she couldn't stop smiling. She was hanging on his every word.

"It was like the pair of them were in their own little bubble together. They were inseparable."

It's a dream come true for 27-year-old Matt, who just a few months ago gushed about what a "pretty lady" Daisy was. The new Time Lord - who recently split up with Brazilian singer Mayana Moura - told us earlier this month how he was looking forward to finding romance again.

He said: "A loving relationship is important and rewarding, and I am a romantic."

We could all see that by the way he was clinging on to Daisy. Now all he's got to do is impress her mum Pearl.

"My mother makes her opinion of my boyfriends very known," Daisy said recently. "And it usually has a massive effect on whether I am with them or not."

It seems Matt has always been a bit of a ladies' man. Pictures surfaced yesterday of him holding hands with Billie Piper.

That particular romantic moment came in 2006 when Billie was playing Rose, opposite David Tennant.

Maybe someone should warn the Doctor's latest assistant, Karen Gillan..

Doctor Who's Karen Gillan swaps her short skirts for old school glamour in New York

Her character's love of short skirts shocked Doctor Who fans.

But off-screen it seems Karen Gillan has more mature tastes.

At a screening of the new series in New York yesterday, the 22-year-old was a picture of old-fashioned Hollywood glamour.

Karen's floor-length flowing purple gown highlighted the former model's statuesque figure.

Along with the new Doctor Matt Smith the Scottish actress is busy promoting the new series, which is set to premiere on BBC America this Saturday.

Karen plays the Doctor's assistant Amy Pond, who makes a living as a kissogram.

Her British debut prompted a flood of comments on online message boards, with a section of fans accusing producers of 'shamelessly sexing up' the long-running family show and labelling it 'slutty'.

All grown up: Karen's short skirts in the new series of Doctor Who, right, drew complaints that the show was being 'sexed up'

But Karen laughed off the remarks and defended the outfit choices.

'She wears lots of short skirts…and it got a few column mentions! It’s interesting, it’s part of the plot and it’s not that bad,' she said.

'I mean, look down most high streets and girls Amy's age wear that. It's not that weird.

'Short skirts show that Amy is confident and comfortable about her look.

'You have to have confidence to wear something like that.'

Matt and Karen were joined by the show's executive producer Steven Moffatt at the screening.

David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor Who, is new recruit to Labour campaign

image

Fetch the sonic screwdriver, start up the Tardis and prepare for power. The Labour Party has unveiled its latest recruit as Doctor Who.

Or, to be strictly accurate, the actor David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor, before he had to regenerate and become a younger, fresher, edgier version of his old self (not a trick that Gordon Brown has mastered yet, but there are a few weeks to go).

In the first election broadcast of the campaign, seen on television last night, Tennant provided the voiceover for a broadcast featuring the actor Sean Pertwee, the son of Jon Pertwee, who played the Third Doctor.

In the 2½-minute film, which is notably devoid of Daleks or any other power-crazy aliens intent on destroying the planet (unless of course there is a subliminal message about the Conservative Party we have missed), Pertwee trudges across a bleak moor as he talks about the tough choices facing people on “the road ahead”. Tennant provides the message at the end: “We have been through tough times, but by staying on the right road, we can make Britain the country we all want it to be, to build a future that is fair for all of us.”

It is filmed in the North York Moors National Park, which in the old days of Doctor Who could have passed muster for some distant planet in the 43rd century.

Tennant has already made plain his view on the Tories: worse than the Slitheen, it seems, possibly even as bad as the Jagaroth. “I think David Cameron is a terrifying prospect,” he said earlier this year. “I get quite panicked at the notion that people are buying his rhetoric.”

One does not, however, live for 900 years, and survive encounters with Ice Warriors and Sea Devils, by having a simplistic attitude to these things.

“Clearly, the Labour Party is not without some issues right now and I do get frustrated,” he said. “They need to sort some stuff out but they are still a better bet than the Tories.”

Matt Smith: 'Doctor Who is a privilege'

Matt Smith has claimed that working on Doctor Who is "glorious".

imageThe 27-year-old actor, who was appointed as the Eleventh Doctor last year, said that it is "a great privilege" to work on the show.

"I've moved up to Cardiff and I get to go and be The Doctor every day, which is just glorious," he told SFX. "It's a great privilege, really.

"And obviously there aren't many parts where a) it's announced like that and b) your life changes in a public sense as much, because obviously the show is so well loved and so widely received that people are aware of it."

He added: "[My life has] changed in the way that I now fight aliens every day! Aliens that aren't actually there in front of me... Often you're looking at a ball of string and some guy, and that's meant to be some sort of horrible demonic creature from the gallows!"

Ten teasers about 'Who' episode two

Episode one is now done and dusted, so we're turning our attention to ep two quicker than you can say "Silence is falling, Doctor".
Here are ten tiny teasers about the Moffat-penned second episode, 'The Beast Below':
1. It's set more than a millennium into the future, at a time when the Earth has been abandoned and the UK is a floating spaceship known as Starship Britain.
2. That apparently makes Amelia Amy... oooh, 1306 years old.
3. The Smilers are creatures that live in arcade machine boxes, similar to the Zoltar fortune teller from BIG. Except you should try to avoid interacting with these.
4. Amy is presented with three options, Matrix-style. She chooses the second, then the third.
5. "Protestors and citizens of limited ***** are *** ** *** *****."
6. There's an homage to Katy Brand's "f***ing Queen". But this one is merely "the bloody Queen".
7. Amy: "You look *****." The Doctor: "No, you look **** ****."
8. Amy wears her nightie throughout the episode - and it gets wet.
9. He may appear to be fun and kooky, but this Doctor can get angry. REALLY angry.
10. Episode two directly segues into episode three when The Doctor gets a call from an old pal.
