Series 6 Volume 1 Episodes 1 to 7

The Doctor returns, alongside newly weds Amy and Rory, to face monsters and mysteries and adventures all across time and space, in a thrilling new series of Doctor Who. Together they’ll find themselves in sixties America, battling the invasion the world forgot, then journey on the high seas of 1696 aboard a pirate ship, to solve the mystery of the Siren. In a bubble universe at the very edge of reality, the Doctor will meet an old friend with a new face, and in a monastery on a remote island in the near future, an industrial accident will take on a terrible human shape. And waiting for them, at the end of all this, is the battle of Demon’s Run, and the Doctor’s darkest hour. Can even the truth about River Song save the Time Lord’s soul?

20 Things from The Doctor's wife! (tachyon-tv)

This episode will change the way you look at Doctor Who (its past, present and future) forever.

This episode is, on the whole, completely standalone.

If, like me, you enjoy spotting references to the classic series, you'll need a very large notepad to jot them all down.

A naked Jon Pertwee jumped into my head at 02:21.

Is it the Michael Sheen? Because it sounds nothing like him.

19:20 "Hold my hand".

All these corridors look the same.

This episode goes to some very dark places. The little ones may require a sofa to hide behind.

At 29:16 you'll want to scream a famous cartoon catchphrase.

At 29:35 Mary Whitehouse will rotate in her grave for several seconds.

31 minutes in and I am officially smitten with Suranne Jones.

33:50: Prepare to squee.

Sexy.

"Did you wish really hard?"

I have a heart of stone and even I welled up a bit.

Fans of the TARDIS spinning through space will need to change their underwear.

The final scene put a big, stupid smile on my face and a warm, deep glow in my belly.

Matt Smith plays every emotion under the sun in this episode, including some we've never seen before.

This episode rewards repeated viewings. And believe me, you'll want to watch it again.

Dr who - The Doctor's Wife hints

The Doctor repeats a line from 'The Eleventh Hour'.

Michael Sheen plays a huge character.

Idris repeats some of her lines.

The Doctor has been doing something wrong for 700 years.

The Cloister Bell makes a return.

A Blue Peter viewer will be happy.

Someone slaps The Doctor.

A desire Rory showed last week comes to fruition.

The phrase "timey wimey" has some new competition.

The RTD era is evoked more than once.

SFX 20 things from The doctor's wife

1 There’s something in the pre-credit teaser that settles an argument that’s been raging in fandom for some time

2 In fact, the whole episode is peppered with cool continuity references, allusions and in-jokes

3 It’s a great, great episode. Very Gaiman (even within the first minute). Not prefect, but the good bits are so good you won’t worry too much

4 One aspect of the story that doesn’t quite deliver, presumably for budgetary reasons, is something that could have involved lots of sets instead but is reduced, largely, to just one multipurpose one… But it’s still fun with a great pay-off

5 Suranne Jones is just stunning in a very challenging role

6 The Doctor is challenged on some fundamental beliefs

7 There are three different versions of one of the series’ icons, two familiar, one completely new

8 Rory waits. Again

9 There are some genuinely sweet, emotional moments

10 There’s some dialogue to die for: some of our favourite examples include the words “ladder”, “winner”, “dancing”, “sexy”, “PE teacher” and “wish really hard”.

11 While it’s not what you’d call action packed, it’s very pacy and cracks along

12 The script demands a couple of aspects of the Eleventh Doctor we have haven’t seen before and Smith acts these scenes beautifully

13 There are some very pretty special FX

14 A revelation about Rory and Amy’s sleeping arrangements will doubtlessly inspire thousands to post, think or tell their mates the same gag

15 Not sure if it’s intentional, but there’s a bit of a “Brain Of Morbius” vibe going on (in two regards)

16 The Doctor leaps in the bath

17 Someone gets their teeth into the Doctor

18 There are some magical musical queues

19 A familiar sound effects is used in some unfamiliar situations

20 The writing’s on the wall for Amy, and it’s quite shocking
