DOCTOR WHO – 2009 SPECIALS FILMING PART 5 – SET REPORT

Just to make this clear, I wasn't there! This is cobbled together from posts by Simon Watkins, Ahremsee, alun.vega, Scooty, BroadwayBaby, and victoria feller. Apologies if I've missed anyone! So if you repost this, please include my URL plus leave the contributors names here. Thanx.
The trucks began arriving at about 3.30pm, the road was closed at 4pm.
David Tennant uses his sonic screwdriver and wore his blue suit and when not filming a blue anorak!
Street signs report this is a congestion charge zone with fines of 3000 yen, its also a low emissions zone, hydrogen powered vehicles only.
One scene was the Doctor goes to the TARDIS, he looks to the left, shocked and falls to his knees. What has he seen that shocks him so?
David Tennant didn't come over to the fans, though he waved and smiled a couple of times. His whole body language didn't look that positive, it might have been the time of the day and the workload, but he definitely looked agitated.
Lindsay Duncans belt held a small holster and handgun. The robot had the words GADGET written on its front. The eye of the robot lit up.
Although there was snow, no Christmas decorations were about, not even trees in windows. All the windows that would have been in the camera view were lit but draped. The line after David Tennant says Aww, snow, I love snow! is delivered by the other male actor, who holds out his hands to feel it falling and says Its not snow!
Filming carried on till roughly about 3.30am.
Seen on set: David Tennant, Lindsay Duncan, Ood Sigma (Played by Paul Kasey), Friendly Robot, the TARDIS, Graeme Harper.
Thanx to all who contributed to this, even though they are unaware of it!

DOCTOR WHO - 2009 SPECIALS FILMING PART 4

DOCTOR WHO - 2009 SPECIALS FILMING PART 3

Straight from the wonderful Scooty, a report on the conclusion of filming this morning:

"Filming carried on till roughly about 3.30am, can't add much to the reports already made except that the Ood, dressed like Ood Sigma, appeared on set, played by Paul Kasey for one scene near the TARDIS. He doesn't interact with anyone, he just seems to appear. How this all fits into things I will never know, but await the excitement of finding out!

The only other scene filmed and not mentioned is as DT goes back to the TARDIS, he looks to the left, shocked and falls to his knees. What on earth has he just seen that shocks him so and causes him to fall down like that?!"

And here are a few more from last night, showing the street signs and there is an Ood too! I think this episode is set slightly in the future!

DOCTOR WHO - 2009 SPECIALS FILMING PART 2

More filming for the Doctor Who special (Episode 4:16) is taking place tonight (Friday 27th) in Victoria Place, Newport. The residents of Victoria Place have been told to expect snow and Christmas decorations so we're obviously looking at the 2009 Christmas Special here.
Filming starts at 10.00pm I believe, and the TARDIS prop is already in situ in a street dusted with visual effects snow.

We're currently getting images courtesy of Ahremsee's Flickr Photostream (thanks to Rob) and updates will keep coming as filming starts. All the usual DWF reporting crew, including Scooty and the gang, are all converging on the shoot so this post will keep updating as we go through the night.
9.15pm
Ahremsee has just reported that David Tennant and Lindsay Duncan are now on set and interacting with a large silver robot and several other travellers.

22.15pm
Tennant is on set and they've brought out a crash mat. He's wearing the blue suit, by the way.

Charles, 60, was clearly taken aback when he met trowel-wielding Matthew Harbor — an eerie lookalike of Prince Harry, 24.

Ginger-haired Matthew, 18, from Mansfield, Notts, was taking part in a construction skills workshop the Prince was visiting at West Nottinghamshire College.

An onlooker said: “It was hilarious — the lad really was the absolute spit of Harry.”

DOCTOR WHO - 2009 SPECIALS FILMING

image

The filming for the, as yet untitled, second (we assume) Doctor Who special of 2009 got off to a bang this evening in a quarry in Taffs Well just north of Cardiff. David Tennant was on location, dressed in a very familiar costume - the orange space suit and yellow helmet from The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit two part story in the 2006 series.

Intrepid reporter Scooty was on the spot: "Filming tonight seemed to concern three major scenes. They were:
- An explosion the size of which I have never seen before. It formed a giant mushroom cloud and left a huge black smoke ring in the sky. It shook the camera from my hand.
- Man in orange spacesuit, almost certainly DT's stunt double, runs away from the explosion (in this case, green screen). He jumps on a trampoline and lands on a crash mat.
- Man in said spacesuit wakes up amongst a load of rubble. And slowly walks forward. This looks like it is DT - I can make out sideburns in a couple of the pictures."
UPDATE: Some footage from the filming. The stunt bit!

It isn't clear yet if this is filming for the same special for which the casting of Lindsay Duncan was recently announced. No doubt we will learn more! Many thanks again to the DWF's Scooty and fellow reporters for the accounts and pictures.

Doctor Who Experience in Second Life

A marvellous bit of technology, Second Life is more than just a game - as proven in this video of the The Doctor Who Experience & Cardiff rendered in superb 3D graphics.

VIDEO COMING SOOON !!!!!!!!!!

The Doctor Who Experience & Cardiff is a whole region in the free to download Second Life online world.  Dedicated to Doctor Who and Torchwood, the architecture within the region - as you can see in the video - includes Roald Dahl Plas, the Millennium Centre and much more.

Omitted from the video is the Doctor Who Museum which resides in the sky (player avatars can fly around the Second Life world) and is a virtual tour of the TARDIS from the original William Hartnell console.

We think this is superb, and strongly recommend anyone with the time to take a step into Second Life to check this superb piece of work in person (as it were).

(With thanks to Victor)

Tesla Coils Perform Doctor Who Theme!

February 21, 2009

Christian Cawley

This is totally - like way - cool, dude.  Performed by the aptly-named ArcAttack! group, the film clip below shows some Tesla Coils taking part in a rendition in their own unique manner of the Doctor Who theme tune.

An underappreciated quality of the lighting generating coils is their adeptness in making music. It so happens that bolts fired by the coils create "crisply distorted" square waves that don't sound too different from synthesizers.

ArcAttack! was founded to utilise this quality in a performance environment, coupling a DJ system with the Tesla coils.

Genius!

Fake Toys on the Market

When will people learn…….

It seems to be the week for Doctor Who fakes - a Sutton woman has been sentenced for selling counterfeit toys of poor and dangerous quality in the run up to Christmas 2007.

Essex girl Kelly Magnus, 31, this week pleaded guilty consumer safety and trading standards offences after taking a short-term lease in the St Nicholas Centre in Sutton in November 2007.

A representative of BBC Worldwide confirmed to the court that the Doctor Who toys on sale were counterfeit, unlicensed manufactures.

Deputy Leader of Sutton Council Councillor Colin Hall said: “We urge customers to beware cheap goods, especially children’s toys, on sale in shops that set up for short periods of time and then move on.

“What looks like a bargain in the shop could have lethal consequences for a child.”

Anyone desperate for low-priced Doctor Who toys and merchandise should keep a careful eye on "bargain watch" sites such as MoneySavingExpert.com or shop around, avoiding shonky market traders and characters such as Ms Magnus.

There's also no reason to imagine that just because one counterfeit seller was sentenced that there are no more counterfeits.  It would be very to hear of an accident or worse that was cause by a sub-standard item of counterfeit Doctor Who merchandise.

Ideally, we would urge you to stick to high street or retail park stockists - or for the most hassle free shopping, use Forbidden Planet's online store.

David Tennant Talks Matt Smith

Speaking to What's On TV magazine, David Tennant recently revealed how he feels about the casting of Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. He explained that he feels that Matt has the right idea about the character of The Doctor and last exchanged opinions with him over the phone. David also told the magazine why he feels it's best to not give too much advice to his successor and a quote of David's can be viewed below;
"We chatted on the phone not long ago and we did exchange a few opinions on what’s about to unfold for him, but advice is a very dangerous thing. Matt’s got an extraordinary journey coming up in all sorts of ways and I’m sure he’ll find his own way through it. I could tell Matt was very up for it, though, and excited in all the right ways. He says he’s going to take it seriously and he seems to have the right idea about playing The Doctor, so far as I can tell."
David Tennant will return to our screens as The Doctor in Planet of the Dead which is scheduled to air sometime around Easter. Michelle Ryan, Noma Dumezweni and Lee Evans will also star in the episode which will be written by both Russell T Davies and Gareth Roberts. The episode will be available in high definition when it broadcasts and the Doctor Who team have recently returned from Dubai where they were filming important scenes for the episode.

Prince Charles has come to town.

Well Kirkby In Ashfield to be more precise Today (20/2/2009).

STAFF and students at West Notts College rolled out the red carpet for Prince Charles when he visited the college's Construction and Logistics Skills Academy in Kirkby today.

His Royal Highness took a tour of the £7.2 million academy at Station Park before unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark his visit to the state-of the-art facilities to a crowd of thrilled onlookers.
He even had the opportunity to show his artistic side when he was given the chance to create marble-style patterns using a feather on a canvas.
College principal Asha Khemka said she was proud to welcome the Prince to the college.
"The college was established over 100 years ago and this is the first time we have had a royal visitor. Your presence here today will help to ensure the continued success of the college for many years to come.
"I feel that the college shares many of the same ambitions for young people you have shown with the work with the Prince's Trust," she said.

Duncan to play Doctor's sidekick

Lindsay Duncan

Duncan will next be seen as Margaret Thatcher in a BBC Two drama

Lindsay Duncan is to guest-star as an assistant to Doctor Who in the programme's second special of 2009.

Duncan will play Adelaide, the Doctor's cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet in the unnamed episode.

The actress, who has starred in Rome and GBH, said "I'm thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who. I've never done anything like this before."

There are four Doctor Who specials planned for 2009 with the first - Planet of the Dead - airing at Easter.

Russell T Davies and Phil Ford are joint writers of the second special and filming will start on the episode in Spring.

David Tennant stars in all four programmes, concluding his run as the Doctor before 26-year-old Matt Smith takes over the role in 2010.

Matt Smith & Lindsay Duncan

Although Lindsay Duncan hasn't appeared before with David Tennant (as far as I can find out), she has appeared on stage with the next doctor, Matt Smith!
The above picture above is from That Face, a stage play Matt & Lindsay appeared in last year!.

Vortex Event in Belfast

Belfast based non-profit genre TV event organisers UT Events is running a rare Northern Ireland Doctor Who event in May!

Actors and characters from Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures will be materialising in Belfast later this year for a day-long celebration of the hugely successful television series at Vortex.

UT Events, a Northern Ireland based events group, have announced VORTEX, a one-day spectacular for fans of Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. The event will take place during the bank holiday weekend in the Europa Hotel, Belfast on Sunday 3rd of May, 2009. Guest actors from the series will be taking part in Q&A sessions, talking to attendees about working on the shows and signing autographs. There will also be opportunities for fans to get photographs taken with the guests.

But this event promises to be very different from anything Belfast has seen before. At Vortex the audience will be transported through time into the world of Doctor Who where they will see the TARDIS, inside and out. They will be joined by many colourful creatures from the series such as Daleks, The Ood and Clockword Droids who will be roaming around the venue, but there will be no sofas to hide behind! On display will be the last human Lady Cassandra and the Doctors faithful robotic dog K-9.

There will be chances to take part in various activities throughout the day such as Prize draws, a Charity auction in aid of the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice and an amazing reproduction of The Weakest Link in the year 200,000 hosted by the Anne Droid herself (as seen in the Doctor Who episode Bad Wolf). A very special Meet & Greet session with the guests may be the highlight for some of our audience and a Themed party in the evening including a Fancy dress competition will bring the event to a close where all attendees can let their hair down and dance the night away.

  • Live Characters - will greet attendees as they arrive
  • Guest Q&As - an opportunity to ask the guest actors about the show
  • Autograph Session - get pictures, posters, DVDs and anything else signed by the actors
  • Photo Session - have a professional photo taken with the actors (ready to collect later in the day)
  • Ianto's Coffee Club - a special meet and greet session with the guests
  • The Weatest Link - enter as special stage version of the hit quiz show as seen in Doctor Who
  • Fancy Dress Competition - win prizes by dressing as your favourite character
  • Themed Party - finish off the day with your best dance moves
  • Charity Auction - in aid of the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice
  • Dealers Tables - various Doctor Who merchandise will be on sale throughout the day

The event starts at 9am on Sunday 3rd of May and runs through to 1am. Tickets for the full day cost just £10 (group discounts are available) and are on sale now through the UT Events website (www.utevents.co.uk). For more ticket and event info, call UT Events on 07709 176 544.

Visit www.utevents.co.uk for more information.

The Daily Record are claiming
that Lindsay Duncan is to the the Doctors assistant for the currently unnamed episode to follow Planet of the Dead!
Lindsay Duncan, who is starring as Baroness Thatcher in the BBC2 drama Margaret, will play Adelaide, the Doctors cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet.
Duncan said I'm thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who. I've never done anything like this before and I'm really looking forward to working with David Tennant and the Doctor Who team.
The second 2009 episode is written by executive producer Russell T Davies and Phil Ford and will be screened on BBC1 later this year.
Note that I can't find any other reports about this, even the BBC press office have nothing about it, so there is a chance it could all be made up, but it does seem very possible!
I expect a post-Easter conformation of the next episode title, names of some stars perhaps (companion included) and possibly some news about Matt Smith, his costume maybe?)

Not Who They Seem?

A fresh Reminder About internet Imposters

There have been several recent cases of people posing as David Tennant and other members of the Doctor Who cast in Internet chat rooms and forums - as well as setting up social networking profiles in their names.

So fans are not disappointed or misled, we'd like to point out that both David Tennant and incoming Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith do not use social networking websites, chatrooms or forums. They wouldn't want fans to think that anyone who uses these are talking to the real actors.

For their own safety, we would strongly advise all Doctor Who fans to ignore any such postings and not be fooled by these impersonators - it will never be David Tennant or Matt Smith online.

Planet of the Dead Bus Rumour

February 17, 2009

Christian Cawley

Things get confusing in the incident hit filming of Planet of the Dead this week as some sources (collected together at io9.com) throw caution to the wind and ignore documented reports...

For instance, Life, Doctor Who & Combom (com-what?) reckon that the third bus - logged as leaving the UK bound for Dubai by people more obsessive than Doctor Who fans (bus-spotters) was in fact a lie or incorrect (despite being mentioned on a prominent South West UK bus-spotting website.)

According to the Combom blog, Planet Of The Dead has been rewritten to include the bus colliding with a piece of space junk, asteroid or another spaceship while en route from London to the alien planet that it crashlands on.

Which makes the hiring of a third bus slightly academic.

Time will tell, I suppose...

tardis-1.jpgMeet budding Telford Time Lord Jason Wardman. He keeps a replica life-size Tardis in his conservatory.

The married dad-of-two, 36, took four months to build a copy of Doctor Who’s time machine as a birthday present for his five-year-old son Adam.

The factory worker and carpenter found plans for the Tardis on the internet and spent evenings and weekends painstakingly putting it together.

tardis-2.jpgMr Wardman, of Admaston Road, Wellington, said his Tardis is just like the real thing with a flashing blue light on the roof - but he admits that is not quite as roomy inside as the Doctor’s machine.

He now hopes to hire out the 8ft Tardis for children’s parties and corporate events.

Mr Wardman said: “It’s just like the real thing and has all the signs properly painted.

“Inside it’s just an empty police box and not a spaceship. I’m good, but I’m not that good.” He said he has been a fan of the BBC TV sci-fi show since he was a child.

Mr Wardman is not the only nimble-fingered Telford fan of the much-loved Time Lord.

Last month we reported that former heroin user Nick Stokes, 33, from Randlay, was poised to launch a new business venture after designing a mini Tardis computer case.

The fourth series of Doctor Who is currently on our screens.

Custom Birthday Dalek

image image

Carpenter Jason Wardman of Shropshire has bettered last year's birthday present for his son - a TARDIS - with a black Genesis of the Daleks-style Dalek.

Comprising of a ring modulator voice alteration unit and powered by an electric wheelchair, Mr Wardman's Dalek was built for his son's 6th birthday - but turned up several weeks late, leading to a postponement of the birthday party!

“All the kids thought it was fantastic.”

“Last year I built a full size police box for my son’s birthday and this year I have built a Dalek for him.”

The carpenter said: “There was a lot of fibre glass involved. I was having to learn new skills, that is what delayed me and finding the fibreglass.”

Must be cracking fun to have a dad making stuff like that - oh to be 6 again!
