Daleks Meet Their Match

Matchstick Dalek

480,000 matchsticks that is - all lovingly and precisely stuck together and in many cases sanded down to build a quite remarkable version of a Dalek.

Pictured here in the Telegraph, Brian Croucher of Bognor Regis built his home built matchstick Dalek - all 5' 3" of it - for 2 hours every day over two years.

"I spent an hour or maybe two on it at a day because I have a bad back and it is difficult sitting still for such a long time," said Mr Croucher, a retired electroplater. "Besides, it can be a tedious business."

"I made a frame at the bottom and got the shape right and just went on from there. I stick the matches together in little blocks and then gradually build them up. My wife hands me the matchsticks and I put them together.

"The hardest bit was the little bubbles on the body because they have to be rounded. There are 56 of them and each one had to be built up and then sanded off."

Thanks to some electronics, the Dalek even barks "EXTERMINATE" - and was built with quite a few £5 bags containing 10,000 matchsticks each. Brian plans to build a 6' wing span Spitfire fighter plane next, and is listening to offers for the Dalek.

John Simm: “It’s a hell of a way to go”

John Simm appeared on the Jonathan Ross radio show this morning to promote the play Speaking in Tongues, which he is currently starring in at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London. But the interview wouldn’t have been complete without a mention of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas specials - David Tennant’s last - which will see the actor returning in the role of the Master.

“Ooh, he’s back all right!” Simm teased. “I can’t tell you [what happens] - the producers are sweating now listening to this! But it’s fantastic, it was such fun to do, and it’s brilliant to be asked to go back and play that character again, and Russell has written these amazing scripts, because obviously they’re David’s last hurrah as the Doctor.”

He added: “It’s a hell of a way to go though. It’s a great, great couple of episodes.”john-simm-jonathan-ross-september

He went on to reveal a few extra tidbits regarding the anticipated two-parter (”Ooh, it’s a two-parter all right!”), and as far as he’s aware, the first instalment will transmit on, as was already regarded, Christmas Day, and the second, The End of Time, will follow on January 1st 2010…

“It’s Christmas Day and, I think, New Year’s Day,” he said. “I’ve never been on Christmas Day before - I’m very excited! And it’s called The End of Time, so no pressure there then for the new Doctor!”

When asked by Ross if he had bumped into any other of the show’s stars during his time filming the story, Simm said: “[John Barrowman] was sniffing around on the set, but I didn’t get any scenes with him this time. I did last time. Last time I got to kill him about 13 times because he never dies does he?”

So, Captain Jack won’t meet the Master again, but it’s safe too say that the Tenth Doctor will come face to face with his arch-nemesis once more (it is his regeneration story, after all…), and Simm is full of nothing but praise for David Tennant, labelling him “officially the nicest man in the world”.

“He’s a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant Doctor,” he finished. “He’s just been wonderful.”

David Tennant’s last episodes will air at the end of the year, after The Waters of Mars in November.

THE STOLEN EARTH TRANSCRIPT

EXT. STREET

The TARDIS has materialised on the corner of a perfectly normal suburban street. The Doctor rushes out through its doors with a look of panic on his face. Donna follows. They take in their surroundings.

THE DOCTOR
It's fine... everything's fine.

A milk-cart trundles down the road and stops a short distance away.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(looking around for something out of the ordinary)
Nothing's wrong, it's all fine!
(calls to milkman)
Excuse me? What day is it?

MILKMAN
Saturday.

THE DOCTOR
Saturday! Good!
(nods, to Donna -)
Good, I like Saturdays.

DONNA
So... I just met Rose Tyler?

THE DOCTOR
(still casting uneasy looks about him)
Yeah.

DONNA
But she's locked away in a parallel world.

THE DOCTOR
(speaking quickly)
Exactly. If she can cross from her parallel world to your parallel world, then that means the walls of the universe are breaking down, which puts everything in danger. Everything. But how?

The Doctor hurries back into the TARDIS, Donna following him. The moment they're inside, there's a tremor in the Earth that shakes first the milk bottles - the milkman regards them, somewhat disturbed - and then they smash altogether, tiles slip from the roofs of houses, the milkman looks up at the sky...

INT. TARDIS

The Doctor's severed hand which he keeps underneath the console in a jar trembles slightly. The Doctor potters around the console, apparently engrossed in pushing buttons and pulling levers.

DONNA
(carefully)
The thing is, Doctor... no matter what's happening - and I'm sure it's bad, I get that. But... Rose is coming back. Isn't that good?

The Doctor does not react for a moment. Then he looks up, eyes shining.

THE DOCTOR
(whispers, big smile)
Yeah.

Donna smiles, just before the TARDIS gives an almighty crash and a shudder which sends them both to the floor.

DONNA
(alarmed)
What the hell was that??

THE DOCTOR
It came from outside!

He runs to the door and opens it - and is faced with nothing but space, lumps of rock floating lazily around them. The Doctor regards the view with some shock. Donna joins him.

DONNA
(completely bemused)
We're in space... how did that happen?
(voice rising in fear)
What did you do?

The Doctor runs back to the console to look at the monitor. What he sees only puzzles him further.

THE DOCTOR
We haven't moved. We're fixed.
(after a moment)
It can't have... no.
(runs back to the door, stares out, utterly disconcerted)
The TARDIS is still in the same place, but the Earth is gone. The entire planet... it's gone!

FAR ACROSS THE UNIVERSE...

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

NEW YORK

Martha Jones lies in the floor, unconscious, amidst broken, smoking wires, sparks and the shouts of frightened people, alarms, chaos. Martha opens her eyes dazedly and lifts her head.

MALE UNIT MEMBER
Confirm all stations online. Can anyone hear me?

MARTHA
What was that?

FEMALE UNIT MEMBER
Emergency systems online.

MARTHA
(sits up)
Was there some sort of earthquake or...?

She stands. UNIT headquarters have been thrown into disarray.

MARTHA (CONT'D)
Jalandra, are you all right?

JALANDRA
Yeah, I'm okay.

MARTHA
(to the room in general)
Is anyone hurt?

A woman called Suzanne crosses to the window and pulls up the blinds.

MARTHA (CONT'D)
We've lost power, someone get the lights back on - DaCosta, see to it right now.
(spots Suzanne at the window)
Suzanne? Are you okay?

SUZANNE
(eyes wide)
Martha. Look at the sky...

MARTHA
Why, what is it?

SUZANNE
(insistently)
Just look at the sky!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

CARDIFF

Like UNIT, Torchwood has been thrown into turmoil by the tremor, papers scattered everywhere, equipment smashed, rubble falling from the ceiling -

JACK
(trying to clamber to his feet)
Whoa! What happened? Must be the rift...
(runs from his office, yelling -)
Gwen? Ianto? Are you okay?

Gwen and Ianto are both in an untidy pile on the floor amidst the mess.

IANTO
No broken bones... slight loss of dignity. No change there, then.

GWEN
(getting to her feet, shocked)
The whole city must've felt that! The whole of South Wales!

JACK
I'm gonna take a look outside...

The alarms are sounding - the door rolls open for Jack and he sprints out. Gwen and Ianto go to the computer, Ianto presses a few buttons -

IANTO
(staring at the screen in disbelief)
Little bit bigger than South Wales.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

EALING, LONDON

Sarah Jane Smith has been thrown to the floor in her attic which has also been turned upside-down by the tremor.

SARAH JANE
(scrambling to her feet)
Luke?? Are you all right?!

She runs to where Luke is crouched in a corner and pulls him to his feet, feeling his face as if making sure he's in one piece.

LUKE
(anxiously)
Felt like some sort of cross-dimensional spatial transference.

SARAH JANE
(noticing the darkness through the window)
It's night. It wasn't night! It was eight o'clock in the morning! Mr Smith, I need you!

The chimney breast opens up with triumphant introductory music as the computer Mr Smith is revealed.

SARAH JANE
I wish you'd stop giving me that fanfare and just tell me what happened!

MR SMITH
Sarah Jane, I think you should look outside. I think you'll find the visual evidence most conclusive.

Sarah Jane rushes to the window.

EXT. OUTSIDE DONNA'S HOUSE

CHISWICK, LONDON

WILFRED
(holding a rounders bat)
It's gone dark... it's them aliens, I'll bet my pension.
(yells to no-one in particular)
What do you want this time, you green swine??

SYLVIA
(gazing at the sky with her mouth open)
Dad...

WILFRED
You get back inside, Sylvia. They always want the women!

SYLVIA
(panicking)
No, Dad, just look... oh, my God! Look at the sky!

Wilfred follows her skyward gaze and clutches at her hand in horror.

EXT. SARAH JANE'S HOUSE

Sarah Jane and Luke stare up at the sky.

SARAH JANE
That's impossible!

EXT. TORCHWOOD

JACK
(whispers, staring at the sky)
That's just impossible...

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

Martha and the rest of the UNIT staff are crowded around the window, just staring up at the heavens...

MARTHA
It can't be...

EXT. STREET

The milkman stands in darkness, where it had been a sunny day only a moment ago. He is also frozen, looking at the sky. A wind billows him - he becomes aware of a disturbance behind him, a buzzing of electricity, a blue flash of light - Rose Tyler appears holding an enormous gun. His eyes widen. Rose looks up at the sky, and is the only one so far who doesn't seem remotely surprised.

ROSE
Right, now we're in trouble.
(releases safety catch)
It's only just beginning...

Finally, we pan up to the night sky. And somehow it is packed with many planets, which are so close, too close, surrounded by beautiful and yet sinister colours.

OPENING CREDITS

INT. TARDIS

Donna moves around the console, eyes wide with horror.

DONNA
(slowly)
But... if the Earth's been moved... they've lost the sun.
(urgently, to the Doctor who is immersed in the computer)
What about my Mum? And Grandad? They're dead? Aren't they? Are they dead?

THE DOCTOR
(helplessly)
I don't know, Donna. I just don't know. I'm sorry. I don't know.

DONNA
(with horrible dawning realisation)
That's my family. My whole world.

THE DOCTOR
(stumped)
There's no readings, nothing. Not a trace. Not even a whisper. Oh, that is...
(straightens, scratches the back of his neck)
... fearsome technology.

DONNA
(voice trembling)
So, what do we do?

THE DOCTOR
(staring blankly ahead of him)
We've got to get help.

DONNA
From where?

THE DOCTOR
Donna... I'm taking you to the Shadow Proclamation. Hold tight.

He pulls a lever and the rota begins to rise and fall.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

The AMNN news channel - the headline reads 'WORLDWIDE EMERGENCY, PLANETS APPEAR IN SKIES.

NEWSREADER
The United Nations have issued an edict asking the citizens of the world not to panic. So far, there has been no explanation of the twenty-six planets which have appeared in the sky.

Change of channel - a programme called 'Universally Speaking'.

RICHARD DAWKINS
But it's an empirical fact: the planets didn't come to us, we came to them. Just look at the stars - we are in a completely different region of space. We've travelled.

Change of channel - the Paul O'Grady Show.

PAUL O'GRADY
Do you know what, I look up and there's all these moons and things - have you seem them? Did you see them?
(Shouts of 'yes!' from the audience)
I thought, what was I drinking last night? Furniture polish?

Ianto, who has been flicking through the channels, bursts out laughing. Jack looks over at him from where he is standing in front of another computer.

JACK
(reprimanding)
Ianto! There's a time and a place.

IANTO
(turns the monitor off, still chortling)
He is funny, though.

JACK
Gwen, come and see!

Gwen makes her way down the stairs, talking to Rhys on her mobile.

GWEN
Rhys? I have no idea, just stay indoors. And can you phone my mother? Tell her um... oh, I don't know, just tell her to take her pills and go to sleep.
(pauses, speaks reassuringly)
I'm gonna come home as soon as I can. I promise. I love you... you big idiot.
(smiles and hangs up)

JACK
Someone's established an artificial atmospheric shell keeping the air and holding in the heat.

IANTO
Whoever's done this wants the human race alive. That's a plus.

The three of them are now gathered around the computer, watching a 3D diagrammatic representation of the 26 planets surrounding Earth.

IANTO (CONT'D)
Twenty-seven planets, including the Earth.

A flashing red spot of light becomes visible amongst the planet.

GWEN
(uneasily)
No, but what's that? That's not a planet!

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

Mr Smith is displaying a similar model to Torchwood, again with the flashing red light.

MR SMITH
The reading seems to be artificial in construction.

SARAH JANE
(trying to make sense of it)
Some sort of space-station, sitting in the heart of the web.

LUKE
(approaches clutching his mobile)
They're fine - Maria and her Dad, they're still in Cornwall. I told them to stay indoors. And Clyde's all right, he's with his Mum.

Sarah Jane rubs Luke's shoulder encouragingly.

MR SMITH
Sarah Jane, I have detected movement. Observe.

The red light has expanded - it now looks like a pulsating sheet blanketing the Earth.

LUKE
Spaceships!

Luke grins excitedly at Sarah Jane who can only muster a nervous smile in return.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

GENERAL SANCHEZ
(marching into a busy control room)
Tracking two-hundred objects, Earthbound trajectory. Geneva is calling a Code Red. Everyone to battle positions. Doctor Jones -
(looks to Martha, who has her mobile to her ear)
If you're not too busy?

MARTHA
I'm trying to phone the Doctor, Sir.

GENERAL SANCHEZ
And?

MARTHA
There's no signal. This number calls anywhere in the universe. It never breaks down. They must be blocking it.
(looks up at the screen displaying the planets and the red light)
Whoever 'they' are.

GENERAL SANCHEZ
We're about to find out. They're coming into orbit.

EXT. STREET

Absolute anarchy - people running, screaming, looting, glass smashing, alarms sounding, a car speeding along with a man hanging out of the sunroof clutching a beer and shouting to passers-by. Rose emerges from an alleyway, still holding her gun. She makes her way slowly down the street. A man with a drink in one hand spots her and throws his arms wide.

DRUNK MAN
(slurring, with mad delight)
The end of the world, darlin'! The end of the stinkin' world!

ROSE
Have one on me, mate.

The man moves on - Rose jumps and turns as she hears a window smash behind her and another alarm going off.

INT. ELECTRONICS STORE

Two youths are looting an electronics store. Rose walks in.

ROSE (CONT'D)
(rather intimidating)
Right! You two! You can put that stuff down, or run for your lives.
(releases safety catch)
Do you like my gun?

The two men run for it. Rose sits down at a computer and worriedly watches the spaceships surround the Earth.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

Sylvia is watching BBC News. The headline reads 'UNIDENTIFIED SPACECRAFT HEADING FOR EARTH'.

NEWSREADER
We're now getting confirmed reports of spaceships. The Pentagon has issued an emergency report...

SYLVIA
Dad. Come and see. They're saying spaceships.

Wilfred enters, clutching his phone to his ear.

SYLVIA (CONT'D)
Did you find her?

WILFRED
No. No, there's no reply.
(so worried)
Oh, where are you, Donna? Where are you, sweetheart?

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

The spaceships loom ever closer on the model on the computer screen.

GWEN
Three-thousand miles and closing.
(agitatedly)
But who are they?!

Jack's phone rings. He reads the caller ID then flips it open.

JACK
Martha Jones! Voice of a nightingale. Tell me you put something in my drink.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

MARTHA
(at her desk, slightly breathless)
No such luck. Have you heard from the Doctor?

JACK
Not a word. Where are you?

MARTHA
New York.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
Hm, nice for some.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

MARTHA
(rising, walking across the office)
I've been promoted. Medical Director on Project Indigo.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
Did you get that thing working?

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

MARTHA
(brow furrowed)
Indigo's top secret. No-one's supposed to know about it.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
Oh, I met a soldier in a bar. Long story.

IANTO
(interjects suspiciously)
When was that?

JACK
(reassuringly)
Strictly professional.

GWEN
Fifteen-hundred miles, boys, and accelerating. They're almost here.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

MR SMITH
I'm receiving communication from the Earthbound ships. A message for the human race.

SARAH JANE
(apprehensively)
Put it through. Let's hear it.

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Jack opens his mouth to say something but then he hears it too -

DALEKS
Exterminate!

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

DALEKS
Exterminate!

Martha hears it. Her eyes widen.

DALEKS
Exterminate!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
No.

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate!

JACK
(trembling)
Oh, no.

GWEN
What is it? Who are they? Do you know them, Jack?

Jack makes no answer but to pull Ianto and Gwen closer to him, and kisses both of their heads in turn.

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate!

Luke's brow is furrowed in confusion, but Sarah Jane is shaking with terror, silent tears streaming down her cheeks.

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!

SARAH JANE
(whispers)
No...

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
(hopelessly, eyes riveted to the monitor, holding Ianto and Gwen tight)
There's nothing I can do. I'm sorry, but we're dead.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate!

SARAH JANE
(clutching Luke, sobbing)
Oh, God you're-- you're so young.

INT. ELECTRONICS STORE

Rose is also picking up the transmission.

DALEKS
Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!

Rose listens, trembling ever so slightly, but with fear, not shock. She strides purposefully out onto the street.

EXT. STREET

Rose looks up at the sky. A Dalek ship flies so low that it is practically skimming the rooftops, firing missiles down into the crowded streets. Rose turns and walks away - a missile strikes behind her and causes an enormous explosion, and she does not so much as flinch.

EXT. SPACE

Hordes of Dalek ships are swarming towards the Earth like flies.

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

DALEK #1
Dalek fleet in battle formation.

DALEK #2
All systems locked and primed.

DALEK #3
Crucible at ninety-percent efficiency!

DALEK #4
Human harvest will commence.

The four Daleks form a circle around a piece of machinery in the centre of the room.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

GENERAL SANCHEZ
Battle positions! Geneva declaring ultimate Code Red. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are at war.

The staff are thrown around like rag dolls from the force of the explosions around them, the air thick with sparks. Martha runs to the window, breathing heavily, and sees the Dalek ships gliding over New York, firing missiles relentlessly as they go.

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

DALEK #1
Supreme Dalek on the bridge.

A door opens and a red Dalek, larger than the others with a deeper, and somehow more arrogant voice emerges.

SUPREME DALEK
Soon, the Crucible will be complete. We have waited long for this ultimate destiny. Now, the Daleks are the masters of Earth.

The spaceship is dense with Daleks, some in the air, some on the floor.

DALEKS
(as one)
Daleks are the masters of Earth! Daleks are the masters of Earth!

INT. TARDIS

The TARDIS shakes violently, Donna and the Doctor holding onto the console for support, the Doctor trying to operate the controls with one hand.

DONNA
So, go on then - what is the Shadow Proclamation, anyway?

THE DOCTOR
Posh name for 'police'. Outer space police. Here we go!

The TARDIS gives a lurch which sends the Doctor flat on his back across the console.

EXT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION

The TARDIS hurtles towards a space station, which is covered with what looks like buildings glowing with a greenish light.

INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION, HQ

The TARDIS materialises near a set of stairs. The Doctor emerges cautiously - he and Donna are greeted by a group of armed Judoon, who immediately point their guns at them. They raise their hands in surrender.

JUDOON
Sco po tro no flow jo ko fo to to.

THE DOCTOR
No bo ho so ko ro toe so.

Donna looks sideways at him with a 'what the hell?' expression.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
Bo-ko-do-zo-go-bo-fo-po-jo!

This seems to work. The Judoon lower their guns.

THE DOCTOR
Ma ho.

INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION, HQ

The Doctor and Donna are speaking to the Shadow Architect in a room guarded around the perimeter by the Judoon.

SHADOW ARCHITECT
(skeptically)
Time Lords are the stuff of legend. They belong in the myths and whispers of the Higher Species. You cannot possibly exist.

THE DOCTOR
Yeah... more to the point, I've got a missing planet.

SHADOW ARCHITECT
Then, you're not as wise as the stories would say. The picture is far bigger than you imagine. The whole universe is in outrage, Doctor - twenty-four worlds have been taken from the sky.

THE DOCTOR
(incredulous)
How many? Which ones? Show me!

He runs to the computer and puts his glasses on. The Shadow Architect shows him.

SHADOW ARCHITECT
The locations range far and wide. They all disappeared at the exact same moment, leaving no trace.

THE DOCTOR
(watching their names flash onto the screen, brow furrowed)
Callufrax Minor, Jahoo, Shallacatop, Woman Wept, Clom - Clom's gone?! Who'd want Clom?

SHADOW ARCHITECT
All different sizes. Some populated, some not, but all unconnected.

DONNA
What about Pyrovilia?

SHADOW ARCHITECT
(condescendingly)
Who is the female?

DONNA
(not liking her tone)
Donna. I'm a Human Being. Maybe not the stuff of legend, but every bit as important as Time Lords, thank you.

The Doctor smiles.

DONNA (CONT'D)
(to the Doctor)
Way back when we were in Pompeii, Lucius said Pyrovillia had gone missing.

JUDOON
Pyrovillia is cold case. Not relevant.

DONNA
How do you mean, 'cold case'?

SHADOW ARCHITECT
The planet Pyrovilia cannot be part of this, it disappeared over two-thousand years ago.

DONNA
Yes, yes. Hang on. But there's the Adipose breeding planet too. Miss Foster said that was lost. But... that must've been a long time ago.

THE DOCTOR
(it hits him)
That's it! Donna, brilliant! The planets have been taken out of time as well as space.
(tampers with computer)
Let's put this into 3D.
(holograms of missing planets appear throughout the room)
Now, if we add Pyrovilia...
(adds Pyrovilia which appears)
And Adipose 3...
(presses a button, Adipose 3 appears. He muses)
There's something missing. Where else, where else, where else, lost, lost, lost, lost...? OH! The Lost Moon of Poosh!

The Doctor adds the Lost Moon of Poosh and then walks amongst the planets which rearrange themselves.

SHADOW ARCHITECT
What did you do?

THE DOCTOR
Nothing. The planets rearranged themselves into the optimum pattern.
(appreciatively)
Oh... look at that. Twenty-seven planets in perfect balance. Come on, that is gorgeous!

DONNA
(snapping him out of it)
Oi! Don't get all spaceman, what does it mean?

THE DOCTOR
(stands by Donna)
All those worlds fit together like pieces of an engine. It's like a power house. But what for?

SHADOW ARCHITECT
Who could design such a thing?

THE DOCTOR
Someone tried to move the Earth once before. A long time ago...
(deep in thought, to himself -)
Can't be...

EXT. LONDON

The Daleks swoop over the Earth, firing down at it mercilessly.

DALEK
Maximum extermination!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Jack rushes to a computer as an alarm sounds. A voice filters through the communications.

CAPTAIN OF THE VALIANT
The shields are down! There's so many of them! Abandon ship!

JACK
(in horror)
The Valiant's down!

IANTO
(from another computer)
Airforce retreating over North Africa! Daleks landing in Japan.

GWEN
We've lost contact with the Prime Minister's plane.
(urgently)
Jack! Manhattan!

JACK
(grabs his phone)
Martha, get out of there.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

Martha is wrapping a bandage around someone's head.

MARTHA
I can't, Jack, I've got a job to do.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
They're targeting military bases, and you're next on the list.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

GENERAL SANCHEZ
(from behind Martha)
Doctor Jones - you will come with me. Project Indigo is being activated.
(Martha stops and looks at him, stunned)
Quick march.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, LOADING BAY 2

General Sanchez leads Martha and another UNIT soldier through a set of double doors and down a corridor at a brisk walk.

MARTHA
(trying to reason with Sanchez)
But we can't use Project Indigo. It hasn't been tested, sir, we don't even know if it works!

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, HQ

The Daleks glide into the office.

DALEK #1
UNIT forces will be exterminated!

DALEK #2
Annihilate UNIT!

They begin to shoot their death rays at everyone in sight. UNIT soldiers attempt to fight back, shooting at them - unsurprisingly, to no avail.

DALEKS
Exterminate!

Suzanne is shot, she screams and her skeleton becomes visible for a brief moment before she collapses onto the floor, dead.

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, TEST AREA 1

A UNIT soldier turns a wheel which opens up some kind of secure storage safe. General Sanchez gestures to a bodypack which is hanging on the wall.

GENERAL SANCHEZ
(to Martha)
Put it on. Fast as you can.

Martha moves over to it, but pauses as she hears Jack's voice on the phone.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
(frantic)
Martha, I'm telling you - don't use Project Indigo, it's not safe!

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, TEST AREA 1

GENERAL SANCHEZ
(warningly)
You take your orders from UNIT, Doctor Jones, not from Torchwood.

MARTHA
(putting on the bodypack)
But why me?

GENERAL SANCHEZ
You are our only hope of finding the Doctor. But failing that... if no help is coming... then by the power invested in me by the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, I authorise you to take this.

He offers Martha what appears to be a digital microchip of some kind, encased in plastic.

GENERAL SANCHEZ (CONT'D)
The Osterhagen Key.

MARTHA
(shakes her head, whispers fearfully)
I can't take that, sir.

GENERAL SANCHEZ
(brandishing it at her insistently)
You know what to do. For the sake of the Human Race.

He closes Martha's unwilling fingers around it. The sound of a Dalek's death ray makes them both look around.

DALEK
Daleks one five breaching north corridor. Exterminate! Exterminate, exterminate!

GENERAL SANCHEZ
Doctor Jones...
(salutes her)
Good luck.

He turns from her, and he and the UNIT soldier face the approaching Daleks head on, firing at them.

DALEKS
Exterminate!

MARTHA
(small voice)
Bye, Jack.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
(yells)
Martha, don't do it!

INT. UNIT, MANHATTAN BASE, TEST AREA 1

Too late, with her eyes tightly closed, Martha pulls the cords either side of the bodypack and disappears into blue light.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
DON'T!

The line has gone dead. Jack lowers it from his ear, stares at it, and kicks the desk in sheer rage and frustration. Gwen flinches.

IANTO
What's Project Indigo?

JACK
(exhaling, trying very hard to keep it together)
Experimental teleport salvaged from the Sontarans. But they haven't got co-ordinates or stabilisation!

GWEN
Where is she?

JACK
Scattered into atoms.
(Gwen stares in horror)
Martha's down.

Ianto puts his hand over his mouth.

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

SUPREME DALEK
Commence the landings. Bring the humans here. Prepare the crucible.

A cold, calculating, not quite Dalek voice echoes out of the intercom.

DAVROS
Supreme Dalek. Is there news?

SUPREME DALEK
Earth has been subjugated.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DAVROS
(in the shadows)
I mean... is there news... of him?

SUPREME DALEK
Negative. No reports of Time Lord. We are beyond the Doctor's reach.

DAVROS
Fascinating. If I had not elevated you beyond crude emotions, I could almost mistake that tone for one of victory. Beware your pride.

SUPREME DALEK
The Doctor cannot stop us.

DAVROS
And yet, Dalek Caan is uneasy.

Davros flicks a switch on his control panel which throws light onto Dalek Caan, on a plinth. His top has been blown off and the mutant is inside, twitching.

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

SUPREME DALEK
The abomination is insane.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DAVROS
Have some respect. Without Dalek Caan, none of this would be possible. And he speaks only the truth.

DALEK CAAN
(in peculiar singsong)
He is coming... the threefold man, he dances in the lonely places. Oh, creator of us all... the Doctor is coming!
(he cackles inanely)

INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION, HQ

The Doctor and the Shadow Architect are by the computer, clearly at a loss for now. Donna is sitting on the stairs. She wipes a tear away, and then stares straight ahead for a long moment, pale faced, every sound blocked out except the beating of a heart... she flinches as an albino servant holds a cup and saucer out to her.

ALBINO SERVANT
You need sustenance. Take the water, it purifies.

DONNA
(dully)
Thanks.

A familiar sound - the sound accompanying the beetle on Donna's back.

ALBINO SERVANT
There was something on your back.

DONNA
(looks up at her in alarm)
How did you know that?

ALBINO SERVANT
You are something new.

DONNA
(shakes her head, looks away)
Not me. I'm just a temp. Short hand, filing, a hundred words per minute. Fat lot of good that is now. I'm no use to anyone.

ALBINO SERVANT
I'm so sorry for your loss.

DONNA
(numbly)
Yeah. My whole planet's gone.

ALBINO SERVANT
(whispers as though imparting a deadly secret)
I mean the loss that is yet to come.
(Donna stares at her. She averts her eyes)
God save you.

The servant leaves her.

THE DOCTOR
(leaning on the banister)
Donna, come on, think. Earth. There must've been some sort of warning. Was there anything happening back in your day, like... electrical storms, freak weather, patterns in the sky?

DONNA
(not in the mood)
Well, how should I know? Um... no. I don't think so, no.

THE DOCTOR
(sighs, straightens up)
Oh, okay. Never mind.

DONNA
Although... there were the bees disappearing.

THE DOCTOR
(sarcastically)
The bees disappearing. The BEES disappearing.

Donna falls silent, a little hurt.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(dawning realisation, practically yells)
The bees disappearing!
(runs to the computer)

SHADOW ARCHITECT
How is that significant?

DONNA
(rushing to join them)
On Earth, we have these insects. Some people said it was pollution or mobile phone signals.

THE DOCTOR
Or... they were going back home.

DONNA
(stares at him)
Back home where?

THE DOCTOR
The planet Melissa Majoria.

DONNA
Are you saying bees are aliens?

THE DOCTOR
Don't be so daft. Not all of them. But, if the migrant bees felt something, some sort of danger, and escaped... Tandocca!

SHADOW ARCHITECT
(beginning to understand)
The Tandocca Scale.

THE DOCTOR
(jabbering at top speed)
The Tandocca Scale is a series of wavelengths used as carrier signals by migrant bees. Infinitely small, no wonder we didn't see it. It's like looking for a speck of cinnamon in the Sahara. But look!
(points at the screen excitedly)
There it is! The Tandocca trail.
(on the screen, a trail of blue light)
The transmat that moved that planets was using the same wavelength! We can follow the path!

DONNA
(already halfway to the TARDIS)
And find the Earth! Well, stop talking and do it!

THE DOCTOR
(hot on her tail)
I am!

INT. TARDIS

The Doctor darts to the console's monitor.

THE DOCTOR
We're a bit late. The signal's scattered, but it's a start!
(runs to the door, pokes his head out to the waiting Shadow Architect and Judoon)

INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION

THE DOCTOR
I've got a blip! It's just a blip, but it's definitely a blip.

SHADOW ARCHITECT
Then according to the strictures of the Shadow Proclamation, I will have to seize your transport and your technology.

THE DOCTOR
(rather taken-aback)
Oh, really? What for?

SHADOW ARCHITECT
The planets were stolen with hostile intent. We are declaring war, Doctor! Right across the universe! And you will lead us into battle!

THE DOCTOR
(clearly not crazy about this idea)
Right. Yes. Course I will. Just go and... get you a key.

He sidles back into the TARDIS - and of course, has absolutely no intention of coming back out. He flings his coat over one of the supports and joins Donna at the console, and throws her a cheeky, wild smile as he pulls a lever.

INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION

SHADOW ARCHITECT
(shouting ineffectually at the disappearing TARDIS)
Doctor, come back! By the Holy Writ of the Shadow Proclamation, I order you to stop!

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET

DALEK
All Humans will leave their homes.

The inhabitants of the houses are gathering outside with their hands behind their heads.

DALEK (CONT'D)
The males, the females, the descendants. You will come with us. Resistance is useless.

MAN
(approaching the Dalek with his wife and child)
Where are you taking us?

DALEK
Daleks do not answer Human questions. Stand in line.

The Dalek moves aside to reveal Wilfred and Sylvia peering cautiously from around the side of a house.

SYLVIA
(imploringly)
Dad, please, come home, they're leaving our street alone.

WILFRED
Yeah, I've got a weapon.

SYLVIA
(unconvinced)
It's a paint-gun.

WILFRED
Exactly. Them Dalek things, they've only got one eye. A good splodge of paint, they'd be blinded!

MAN
(to the Dalek)
We're not going. Do you hear me??
(to his wife)
Laura, get back inside the house. Simon, get inside. Go!

His wife and little boy hurry back into their house. The man picks up a brick and lobs it at the Dalek.

MAN (CONT'D)
(angrily)
Get back in the sky!

The brick thuds onto the Dalek's casing, causing absolutely no damage whatsoever.

MAN (CONT'D)
Go back where you came from and leave us alone!

The Dalek advances dangerously. The man scarpers back into the house.

DALEK
Dalek attack formation seven.

Three Daleks line up on the pavement outside the man's house.

DALEK (CONT'D)
Maximum extermination!

The three Daleks each shoot a different window of the house, and the whole building goes up in flames, much to the horror of onlookers.

WILFRED
(numbly)
They're monsters.

SYLVIA
(tugging at him, terrified)
Please, Dad, come home.

With a small yelp, Wilfred allows her to pull him away. They hurry around the back of the houses, but to no avail - they are stopped by a lone Dalek.

DALEK
Halt! You will come with me.

WILFRED
Will I, 'eck!

He aims the paint-gun at the Dalek and fires. A splodge of yellow paint lands on the eyepiece with a wet splat. For a moment, it looks like it has worked - but then the paint boils away.

DALEK
My vision is NOT impaired.

SYLVIA
I warned you, Dad!

DALEK
Hostility will not be tolerated! Exterminate! Exterminate! Extermin-

Suddenly, the whole top half of the Dalek is blown off and it is left a smouldering wreck. Rose is revealed to be standing just behind it with her massive gun.

WILFRED
(holding out his paint-gun)
Do you want to swap?

ROSE
(going over to them)
You're Donna Noble's family, right?
(Wilfred nods)
I'm Rose Tyler, and I need you.

INT. NOBLES' KITCHEN

WILFRED
(to Rose)
I tried calling her, but I can't get through. She's still with the Doctor, I know that much, and the-- and the last time she phoned, it-- it was from a planet called Midnight, made of diamonds.

SYLVIA
(holding a pot of tea)
What the hell are you two on about?

WILFRED
Look, she's out there, sweetheart! Your daughter! She's travelling the stars with that Doctor. She always has been.

SYLVIA
(like he's mad)
Don't be ridiculous.

WILFRED
(angry at her narrow-mindedness)
Oh, come on, open your eyes. Look at the sky. Look at the-- look at the Daleks! You can't start denying things now!

ROSE
(dejectedly)
You're my last hope. If we can't find Donna... we can't find the Doctor.
(agitated, almost to herself)
Where is he?

INT. TARDIS

The rota rises and falls. The Doctor and Donna hold on to the console for support - and then it stops dead.

THE DOCTOR
It's stopped...

DONNA
What do you mean? Is that good or bad? Where are we?

THE DOCTOR
(observing the monitor)
The Medusa Cascade.

EXT. THE MEDUSA CASCADE

The TARDIS drifts lazily through the Medusa Cascade.

INT. TARDIS

THE DOCTOR
(reminiscently)
I came here when I was just a kid. Ninety years old. It was the centre of a rift in time and space.

DONNA
So... where are the twenty-seven planets?

THE DOCTOR
(quietly)
Nowhere. The Tandocca Trail stops dead.
(rests his head back against a support)
End of the line.

DONNA
(swallows nervously, but not without faith)
So, what do we do? Doctor? What do we do?

The Doctor says nothing. He merely continues watching the screen, with an air of defeat.

DONNA (CONT'D)
(pleadingly)
Don't do this to me.
(shakes her head in denial, whispers -)
No, don't. Don't do this to me. Not now.
(urgently)
Tell me what we're going to do!

Still, the Doctor says nothing. His wordlessness, his uncharacteristic hopelessness, scares her more than anything.

DONNA (CONT'D)
(voice shaking in fear)
You never give up!
(begs)
Please!

Still nothing. Donna puts first one hand over her mouth, and then the other.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Gwen is sitting on the sofa, just waiting. A transmission filters through, over the screeches from the Daleks above them.

UN COMMANDER GENERAL
This is the Commander General of the United Nations calling the Dalek fleet. We surrender. Repeat: we surrender.

Ianto puts down a tray of coffee and falls into a chair.

UN COMMANDER GENERAL (CONT'D)
Planet Earth surrenders.

Jack is sat on the floor with his back against the wall, knees drawn up, clutching his phone.

DALEK
(from above)
Humans selected for testing will follow Dalek instructions.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

Sarah Jane sits with her arm around Luke.

DALEK
(through transmission)
The Daleks reign supreme. All hail the Daleks!

A shuddering breath escapes Sarah Jane and she closes her eyes in despair.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

Wilfred has his arm around Sylvia as they sit huddled together in an armchair. He kisses her forehead as she cries quietly.

DALEK
(from outside)
You will obey Dalek instruction without question. You will obey your Dalek ma--

The Dalek is cut off by a loud beeping sound. Wilfred and Rose look around to see what caused this sound - the laptop has sprung into life, displaying white noise and a familiar voice straining to get through.

HARRIET JONES
Can anyone hear me? The subwave network is open, you should be able to hear my voice...
(Rose goes to the laptop in surprise)
Is there anyone there?

ROSE
I know that voice...!

She kneels in front of the laptop eagerly.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

LUKE
(of the voice)
Who's that?

SARAH JANE
Some poor soul calling for help.
(helplessly)
There's nothing we can do.

LUKE
But look at Mr Smith!

MR SMITH
Processing incoming subwave.

Mr Smith displays the vague outline of Harriet Jones, buried in white noise.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Gwen jumps to her feet, having also heard Harriet Jones' voice.

HARRIET JONES
This message is of the utmost importance. We haven't much time. Can anyone hear me?

GWEN
(at the computer, which is also displaying the white noise)
Someone's trying to get in touch.

JACK
(quietly)
The whole world's crying out. Just leave it.

HARRIET JONES
(reprimanding)
Captain Jack Harkness, shame on you!

Her image is slowly clearing, assuming colour... Ianto leaps to his feet and Jack's attention is caught.

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
Now, stand to attention, sir!

JACK
(running to the computer)
What?! Who is that?

The image clears completely. Harriet Jones is sitting in front of her computer in her house, flashing an ID card at the screen.

HARRIET JONES
Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister.

JACK
Yeah, I know who you are.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
(yelling at the screen excitedly)
Harriet! It's me, it's me! Oh, she can't hear me -
(to Wilfred)
Have you got a webcam?

WILFRED
No.
(gestures Sylvia)
She wouldn't let me. She said they're naughty.

ROSE
(turns back to the laptop)
Well, I can't speak to her then, can I?

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
Sarah Jane Smith, 13 Bannerman Road.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
Are you there?

SARAH JANE
(jumps to her feet)
Yeah! Yeah, I'm here! It's me!

HARRIET JONES
Good!

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
Now, let's see if we can talk to each other.

She presses a few buttons. Her screen is divided into four squares. She is in the first, Jack in the second, Sarah Jane in the third - and the fourth is still white noise.

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
The fourth contact seems to be having some trouble getting through.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
(pointlessly)
That's me! Harriet, that's me!

HARRIET JONES
I'll just boost the signal.

She does so, and Martha's face appears in the fourth square.

MARTHA
Hello?

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Gwen, Ianto and Jack laugh with relief.

JACK
(delighted)
Martha Jones!

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
(annoyed)
Who's she?! I want to get through!

JACK
Martha, where are you?

MARTHA
I guess Project Indigo was more clever than we thought.

INT. JONES' HOUSE

MARTHA (CONT'D)
One second I was in Manhattan -

INT. UNIT, MAHATTAN BASE, TEST AREA 1

Flashback to Martha pulling the cords on her bodysuit -

MARTHA
(voice-over)
Next second -

INT. JONES' HALLWAY

Flashback, Martha is curled up on the floor in her hallway.

MARTHA
(voice-over)
Maybe Indigo tapped into my mind, because I ended up in the one place that I wanted to be.

Martha scrambles to her feet. Her Mum appears at the top of the stairs, looking down at her as if she cannot believe her eyes.

MARTHA
Mum?

Francine stumbles down the stairs towards Martha, so happy and surprised to see her. She throws her arms around her .

INT. JONES' HOUSE

FRANCINE
(to Martha)
You came home. At the end of the world, you came back to me.

She and Martha smile at one another.

MARTHA
But all of a sudden, it's like... the laptop turned itself on?

HARRIET JONES
It did.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
That was me.
(flashes her ID card again)
Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister.

MARTHA
(smiling)
Yes, I - know who you are.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

HARRIET JONES
I thought it was about time we all met, given the current crisis. Torchwood - this is Sarah Jane Smith.

JACK
(to Sarah Jane)
I've been following your work. Nice job with the Slitheen...

SARAH JANE
Yeah, well, I've been staying away from you lot. Too many guns.

Nods in Luke's direction by way of explanation.

JACK
All the same... might I say, looking good, ma'am.

SARAH JANE
(pleased)
Really? Oo!

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
(wearily but not unamused)
Not now, Captain.
(to Martha)
And Martha Jones, former companion to the Doctor.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
(indignantly)
Oi! So was I!

INT. JONES' HOUSE

MARTHA
But how did you find me?

HARRIET JONES
This, ladies and gentlemen, this is a subwave network.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
A sentient piece of software programmed to seek out anyone and everyone who can help to contact the Doctor.

INT. JONES' HOUSE

MARTHA
(nervously)
What if the Daleks can hear us?

HARRIET JONES
No!

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
That's the beauty of the subwave. It's undetectable.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

SARAH JANE
(impressed)
And... you invented it?

HARRIET JONES
I developed it.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

From a wide-shot of Harriet's room, we can see that hers is slightly more than an average PC.

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
It was created by the Mr Copper Foundation.

JACK
Yeah, but what we need right now is a weapon.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK (CONT'D)
Martha, back there at UNIT, what did they give you? What was that key thing?

INT. JONES' HOUSE

MARTHA
(shows them)
The Osterhagen Key.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
(in a tone that cannot be argued with)
That key is not to be used, Doctor Jones. Not under any circumstances.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
But what is an Osterhagen Key?

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
(commandingly)
Forget about the key! And that's an order.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
All we need is the Doctor.

SARAH JANE
(apologetically)
Oh, excuse me, Harriet, but well, the thing is... if you're looking for the Doctor, didn't he depose you?

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
He did. And I've wondered about that for a long time, whether I was wrong. But I stand by my actions to this day, because I knew - I knew that one day, the Earth would be in danger and the Doctor would fail to appear. I told him so myself, and he didn't listen.

INT. JONES' HOUSE

MARTHA
But I've been trying to find him. The Doctor's got my phone on the TARDIS, but I can't get through.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
(peeved)
Nor me, and I was here first.

HARRIET JONES
That's why we need the subwave - to bring us all together.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
Combined forces.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
The Doctor's secret army.

JACK
(dawning idea)
Wait a minute. We boost the signal - that's it! We transmit that telephone number through Torchwood itself, using all the power of the rift...

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

LUKE
And we've got Mr Smith!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Jack exchanges an amused look with Gwen and Ianto.

LUKE (CONT'D)
He can link up with every telephone exchange on the Earth.

INT. JONES' HOUSE

Martha and Francine glance at one another, smiling.

LUKE (CONT'D)
He can get the whole world to call the same number, all at the same time.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

LUKE (CONT'D)
Billions of phones calling out, all at once!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
Haha, brilliant!
(points at Luke)
Who's the kid?

SARAH JANE
That's my son!

IANTO
(shuffling in front of the screen. To Jack -)
Excuse me. Sorry.
(To the others -)
Sorry. Hello. Ianto Jones. Um, if we start transmitting, then the subwave network is going to become... visible. I mean, to the... Daleks.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
Yes, and they'll trace it back to me, but my life doesn't matter. Not if it saves the Earth.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
(stands to attention, salutes)
Ma'am.

HARRIET JONES
Thank you, Captain.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
But there are people out there, dying. On the streets.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

WILFRED
Ah, marvellous woman. I voted for her.

SYLVIA
You did not!

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
Now, enough of words. Let's begin.

She places her hands on the keyboard, and begins.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

Sarah Jane and Luke share an excited look.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

The Torchwood Team burst in action, dashing from terminal to terminal.

JACK
Rift power activated.

GWEN
All terminals co-ordinated.

Gwen helps Ianto with a bunch of wires - he connects them to the column that rises up into the water feature outside the Millennium Centre.

IANTO
National Grid online - giving you everything we've got!

The machinery whirrs as it powers up.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

Sarah Jane and Luke are busy at Mr Smith's controls.

SARAH JANE
Connecting you to Mr Smith!

LUKE
All telephone networks combined!

Screen displays a map of the UK with red dots indicating the networks.

INT. MARTHA JONES' HOUSE

MARTHA
(picks up her phone)
Sending you the number... now!

She presses enter. The number begins to dial.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
Opening subwave network to maximum.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

Sarah Jane and Luke step back, ready to let Mr Smith take over.

SARAH JANE
Mr Smith... make that call.

MR SMITH
(the number displayed on his screen)
Calling... the Doctor.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
So am I.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
And... sending!

He pushes a lever and stands back as a ring of electric blue light travels slowly up the column, up and out -

EXT. CARDIFF BAY

The rings of blue light travel up the water feature, emanating up into space with a soft bleeping sound.

EXT. SPACE

The rings of light travel out into space, becoming larger the further away they are.

INT. TARDIS

The bleeping becomes audible to the Doctor. His phone rings.

THE DOCTOR
(snapping out of his state of defeat in a second)
PHONE!

DONNA
Doctor, phone!

THE DOCTOR
(answers it)
Martha, is that you?! It's a signal...

DONNA
Can we follow it?

THE DOCTOR
(putting his stethoscope on determinedly)
Oh, just watch me.

He places his phone down in front of the monitor and presses his stethoscope to it.

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

DALEK
Emergency! Unknown network detected, subwave frequency!

SUPREME DALEK
Find the point of origin! Find and exterminate!

DAVROS
(through intercom)
I warned you, Supreme One.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DAVROS (CONT'D)
Just as Dalek Caan foretold. The Children of Time are moving against us. But everything is falling into place.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Equipment explodes, sparks fly, utter chaos.

JACK
(at a computer, yelling above the racket)
I think we've got a fix!

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

SARAH JANE
Mr Smith now at two-hundred percent!

Sarah Jane and Luke jump backwards as sparks fly from Mr Smith.

SARAH JANE
(impatiently)
Oh, come on, Doctor!

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

Rose, Sylvia and Wilfred are standing together, each dialling the number on their mobiles. Rose holds hers high above her head.

ROSE
(whispers)
Find me, Doctor.
(closes her eyes, praying)
Find me.

INT. TARDIS

THE DOCTOR
Got it! Locking on!

He pulls a lever, causing a shudder that sends them both falling all over the place again. Sparks fly from the console.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Jack gestures for Ianto to take his place at the terminal.

GWEN
Harriet, a source has locked onto your location. They've found you.

HARRIET JONES
I know.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
I'm using the network to mask your transmission. Keep going!

DALEK
(from just outside)
Exterminate!

The Daleks blast a hole in the side of her house, but she does not look around, wholly set on finishing her job.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Gwen is disturbed but follows her lead, carries on typing...

INT. TARDIS

The whole console has gone up in flames. The TARDIS shakes violently. Donna gasps.

THE DOCTOR
(yells above the noise)
We're travelling through time! One second in the future! The phone call's pulling us through!

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
(presses one last button)
Captain, I'm transferring the subwave network to Torchwood. You're in charge, now. And tell the Doctor from me: he chose his companions well.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Jack nods with a sad smile.

INT. HARRIET JONES' HOUSE

HARRIET JONES
It's been an honour.

Three Daleks smash through the window into her house. Harriet stands to meet them face to face. She strides forward and flashes her ID card one last time.

HARRIET JONES (CONT'D)
Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister.

DALEK
Yes, we know who you are.

HARRIET JONES
Oh, you know nothing of any human. And that will be your downfall.

DALEK
(after a slight pause)
Exterminate!

Harriet braces herself. In a second, she is dead.

INT. JONES' HOUSE

The square on the screen that once held Harriet's image turns to white noise.

INT. TARDIS

THE DOCTOR
(shouting at the top of his lungs)
THREE! TWO! ONE!

The Doctor and Donna both hold on tight, yelling like they're on a rollercoaster.

EXT. THE MEDUSA CASCADE

The TARDIS hurtles towards the now visible Earth through the transmission. The other 26 planets rapidly appear around it, one by one.

INT. TARDIS

The fire has died down and the TARDIS has stopped shaking. The Doctor and Donna stare at the monitor, beginning to smile as they realise - they've found it.

DONNA
The twenty-seven planets!
(spots it on the screen, delighted)
And there's the Earth! But why couldn't we see it?

THE DOCTOR
The entire Medusa Cascade has been put a second out of sync with the rest of the universe. Perfect hiding place, tiny little pocket of time. But we found them!

A whirring sound, the screen blurs out slightly.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(curiously)
Oh, oh... what's that? Hold on, hold on...
(turns a knob and peers into the monitor)
Some sort of... subwave network.

The image clears, and the grid of webcams is shown on the screen - the Doctor and Donna have replaced Harriet Jones.

JACK
(laughs in relief, then, angrily -)
Where the hell have you been?! Doctor, it's the Daleks!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

GWEN
Ooh, he's a bit nice. I thought he'd be older.

IANTO
He's not that young.

INT. TARDIS

SARAH JANE
It's the Daleks! They're taking people to their spaceship!

Sarah Jane and Martha jabber over each other. The Doctor watches them, a smile spreading across his face.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

MARTHA
But it's not just Dalek Caan!

SYLVIA
(spotting her)
That's Donna!

WILFRED
(proudly)
That's my girl!

Rose says nothing, overcome with seeing the Doctor's face again.

INT. TARDIS

THE DOCTOR
(beaming)
Sarah Jane! Who's that boy? That must be Torchwood. Aren't they brilliant?

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

Rose has a half smile on her face, just watching.

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
(fondly)
Look at you all, you clever people!

INT. JONES' HOUSE

DONNA
That's Martha!

INT. TARDIS

DONNA (CONT'D)
And who's...
(points, a mischievous look on her face)
... he?

THE DOCTOR
Captain Jack. Don't!
(shakes his finger at her warningly)
Just... don't.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

ROSE
(quietly, unable to take her eyes off him)
Doctor, it's me. I came back.

INT. TARDIS

The Doctor looks from Jack to Sarah Jane to Martha, taking them in, as if looking for someone else.

DONNA
It's like... an outer-space Facebook!

THE DOCTOR
(to himself)
Everyone except Rose...

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

Rose casts her eyes down despondently.

INT. TARDIS

Donna catches the Doctor's tone and casts him an uneasy sideways glance.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DALEK CAAN
(giggles)
He is here! The Dark Lord is come!

DAVROS
Supreme One - this subwave network, I would address it. Give me access.

INT. TARDIS

The screen turns to white noise.

THE DOCTOR
Ah...

DONNA
(anxiously)
We've lost them!

THE DOCTOR
(turning a knob)
No, no, no, no, no! There's another signal coming through, there's someone else out there.
(bashes the top of the monitor)
Hello? Can you hear me?
(hopefully)
Rose.

He watches the monitor, breathing heavily, waiting, but-

DAVROS
Your voice is different, and yet, its arrogance is unchanged.

The Doctor recognises the voice immediately. He freezes.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

SARAH JANE
(whispers, horrified)
No. But he's dead.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

For the first time, Davros emerges from the shadow, shedding light on his shocking form.

DAVROS
Welcome... to my new Empire, Doctor.

INT. TARDIS

Donna takes a step backwards in revulsion.

DAVROS (CONT'D)
It is only fitting that you should bear witness to the resurrection and the triumph of Davros, Lord and Creator of the Dalek Race.

The Doctor seems to be literally frozen with fear. He cannot speak.

DONNA
Doctor?

DAVROS
Have you nothing to say?

DONNA
(concernedly, trying to reassure him)
Doctor, it's all right. We're... we're in the TARDIS. We're safe.

THE DOCTOR
(numbly)
But you were destroyed.
(shaking)
In the very first year of the Time War, at the Gates of Elysiem.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

THE DOCTOR (CONT'D)
I saw your command ship flying into the jaws of the Nightmare Child. I tried to save you...

DAVROS
But it took one stronger than you. Dalek Caan himself.

DALEK CAAN
(in insane singsong)
I flew into the wild and fire. I danced and died a thousand times!

DAVROS
Emergency temporal shift took him back into the Time War itself.

INT. TARDIS

THE DOCTOR
(angrily, disbelieving)
But that's impossible, the entire War is time-locked.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DAVROS
And yet, he succeeded. Oh, it cost him his mind, but imagine - a single, simple Dalek succeeded where Emperors and Time Lords have failed. A testament, don't you think, to my remarkable creations?

INT. TARDIS

THE DOCTOR
And you made a new race of Daleks.

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DAVROS
I gave myself to them. Quite literally. Each one grown from a cell of my own body.

He pulls his leather suit open to reveal his rotten, emaciated form, his ribs and heart visible.

DAVROS (CONT'D)
New Daleks. True Daleks.

INT. TARDIS

DAVROS (CONT'D)
I have my children, Doctor. What do you have, now?

THE DOCTOR
(barely over the shock of seeing him)
After all this time... everything we saw, everything we lost... I have only one thing to say to you.
(loudly, full of maniac energy)
BYE!

He pulls a lever, cutting him off.

EXT. SPACE

The TARDIS hurtles towards the Earth.

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

SUPREME DALEK
Emergency! Locate the TARDIS! Find the Doctor!

INT. CRUCIBLE, THE VAULT

DAVROS
He will go to the Earth to find his precious human allies.

DALEK CAAN
And death is coming...
(titters)
I can see it...! Everlasting death for the most faithful companion!

INT. CRUCIBLE, BRIDGE

DALEK
Subwave network re-routed. New location: Torchwood.

SUPREME DALEK
Then exterminate them, at once! Exterminate Torchwood!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Captain Jack is darting around busily, getting ready, phone to his ear.

IANTO
(at terminal)
Gwen! Dalek saucer heading for the Bay. They've found us.

Ianto rushes away. The blinking red dot on the screen closes in on Cardiff Bay. Gwen takes over the terminal.

JACK
(dashing around, on phone)
Martha, open that Indigo device! Now, listen to me: lift the central panel. There's a string of numbers that keep changing.
(picks up a large gun)

INT. JONES' HOUSE

JACK (CONT'D)
But the fourth number keeps oscillating between two different digits. Tell me what they are.

MARTHA
(looking)
It's a four and a nine. We could never work out what that was.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

JACK
(gleefully, Ianto helps him on with his jacket)
That's a teleport base-code, and that's all I need to get this thing working again.
(adjusts his wrist device accordingly)
Oscillating four... and nine. Thank you, Martha Jones.

He flips his phone shut. Gwen hands him his gun.

JACK (CONT'D)
I've gotta go. I've got to find the Doctor.

Gwen and Ianto watch him, motionless and silent.

JACK (CONT'D)
(reassuringly)
I'll come back.
(no answer - more emphatically)
I'm coming back!

GWEN
Don't worry about us. Just go.

IANTO
We'll be fine.

JACK
You'd better be.

He teleports out. Gwen and Ianto look at one another, fearful. They clutch onto one another in response to an almighty crash from above. Rubble falls from the ceiling. They creep forwards silently, listening...

DALEK
(from above, but certainly inside)
Exterminate! Exterminate!

They freeze.

GWEN
(resignedly)
They're here.

INT. SARAH JANE'S ATTIC

MR SMITH
TARDIS heading for vector seven. Grid reference: 665...

Sarah Jane rushes to get ready.

LUKE
There are Daleks out there!

SARAH JANE
(pulling her coat on)
I know. I'm sorry, but I have GOT to find the Doctor!
(grabs keys)
Don't move. Don't leave the house. Don't do anything.

MR SMITH
I will protect the boy, Sarah Jane.

SARAH JANE
(sincerely)
I love you. Remember that.

With a stifled sob, she leaves Luke standing there with his brow furrowed.

EXT. SARAH JANE'S HOUSE

Sarah Jane gets into her car, starts it, and skids off down the road in a tearing hurry.

INT. NOBLES' LIVING ROOM

Like Jack and Sarah Jane, Rose is set to go. She's on her phone.

ROSE
Control? I need another shift. Lock me onto the TARDIS. Now.

She flips the phone closed, and faces Wilfred and Sylvia.

ROSE (CONT'D)
(with barely suppressed excitement)
Right! I'm gonna find him.
(grins)
Wish me luck!

SYLVIA
Oh, good luck!

WILFRED
Yeah, good luck, sweetheart!

Rose disappears in a blinding flash of blue light.

EXT. STREET

The TARDIS has materialised outside a church - the road is full of abandoned cars parked haphazardly, overturned pushchairs and bicycles, scattered rubbish, and unnatural silence. As if to underline this image, dog barks in the distance.

DONNA
(unsettled)
It's like a ghost town.

THE DOCTOR
Sarah Jane said that they were taking the people. But what for?
(turns to Donna, urges her to remember)
Think, Donna. When you met Rose in that parallel world, what did she say?

DONNA
Just... the darkness is coming.

THE DOCTOR
Anything else?

Donna thinks a moment - then her eye is caught by something over the Doctor's shoulder.

DONNA
(softly)
Why don't you ask her yourself?

The Doctor furrows his brow, uncomprehending. A small smile spreads across Donna's face - the Doctor follows her gaze, turns around with wide eyes... and there she is, at the far end of the street - Rose. She pauses when he turns and smiles with sheer joy. The Doctor cannot believe his eyes, for the moment. He's just staring. Rose breaks into a run, and then, so does the Doctor. Rose is weighed down somewhat by her gun, but the Doctor more than makes up for this, sprinting towards her like there's nothing else he wants more, with an expression of pure exhilaration. Perhaps it is because they are both so focused on reaching each other that they do not see a Dalek move out of the shadows until the last moment.

DALEK
Exterminate!

Rose gasps in horror. The Doctor turns around, too late - the Dalek shoots at him. The death ray only skims his chest, but it's enough. He falls to the ground. Donna gasps and begins to run to him. Just in time, Jack appears in a flash of blue light and with an impressively quick surmise of the situation, uses his gun to blow the top off the Dalek. Rose dumps her gun on the floor as she finally reaches the Doctor. She kneels beside him and cradles his head in her hand.

ROSE
I've got you. It missed you. Look!
(she smiles shakily)
It's me, Doctor.

The Doctor is just about conscious - he smiles through his pain, so absolutely content just to be able to see her.

THE DOCTOR
Rose.

ROSE
(whispers)
Hi.

THE DOCTOR
(weakly)
Long time no see.

ROSE
(as though this is putting it mildly)
Yeah. Been busy, you know.

The Doctor convulses.

ROSE
(frantically)
Don't die. Oh, my God, don't die.
(whimpers)
Oh, my God, don't die.

Jack and Donna reach them.

JACK
(urgently)
Get him into the TARDIS, quick. Move!

Between them, Rose and Donna help the Doctor to his feet. Jack picks up Rose's gun, scanning the area for a threat.

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

Gwen emerges with two guns, one for her, one for Ianto.

IANTO
But, they don't work against Daleks.

GWEN
Yeah? Well, I'm going out fighting. Like Owen, like Tosh. How about you?

She hold a gun out to Ianto. He takes it.

DALEKS
(from above)
Exterminate!

IANTO
Yes, ma'am.

INT. TARDIS

Rose and Donna lay the Doctor down on the grilling where he twitches and moans in pain. Rose watches him helplessly, cradling him, tears spilling from her eyes.

DONNA
(distressed)
What-- what do we do? There must be some medicine or something!

JACK
(throws guns down on seats)
Just step back.
(commandingly)
Rose! Do as I say, and get back!

Rose can't even look away from him, let alone get back.

JACK (CONT'D)
(gently but firmly)
He's dying, and you know what happens next.

DONNA
(stands slowly, stares at Jack)
What do you mean?

ROSE
(whispers through copious tears)
But you can't... not now, I came all this way.

DONNA
(frantically)
What do you mean? What happens next?

The Doctor holds his hand out before him - he and Rose stare at it apprehensively. It glows with an orange light.

THE DOCTOR
It's starting.

His whole body starts to glow. He groans. Rose looks on, powerless, shaking.

EXT. ROAD

Sarah Jane's car skids around the corner. She gasps in terror as she is forced to come to an abrupt halt by two Daleks.

DALEK #2
All human transport is forbidden.

SARAH JANE
(screams, raises her hands)
No! I surrender, I'm sorry!

DALEK #2
Daleks do not accept apologies. You will be exterminated.

DALEK #1
Exterminate!

Sarah Jane throws her arms up over her face, whimpering.

DALEK #2
Exterminate!

INT. TORCHWOOD HUB

The Daleks break into the Hub where Gwen and Ianto are waiting with their guns. The door rolls open.

DALEK
Exterminate! Exterminate!

Gwen and Ianto fire, Gwen roaring with rage.

INT. TARDIS

JACK
(prising Rose away from the Doctor and pulling her to a safe distance)
Here we go! Good luck, Doctor!

Jack has his arms protectively around Donna and Rose. The Doctor strains to his feet.

DONNA
Will someone please tell me what is going on?

ROSE
(voice trembling)
When he's dying, his-- his body, it-- it repairs itself, it changes.
(to the Doctor, her anguish ineffectual)
But you can't.

THE DOCTOR
(with effort)
I'm sorry. It's too late. I'm regenerating!

He throws his head backwards, his arms flung wide - orange energy explodes from his skin, erupting through the neck and sleeves of his suit. Donna, Jack and Rose are forced to avert their eyes at the light intensity. Rose squints through the blaze to watch as he regenerates, desperate to see what comes next.
