Matt Smith Companions?

More Eleventh Doctor companion speculation comes this weekend from The Stage, where Mark Wright's blog points out that it has been pretty quiet on the Doctor Who front.

Which is hardly surprising given that this is a "Who-Lite" year - or is it?

Given that in 2009 somewhere in the region of 12 episodes are being filmed (could be more could be a bit less) and 3 or 4 of these are aired, one would expect a bit more news on the casting front, particularly on the much-vaunted Eleventh Doctor companion role.

Among Mark Wright's contenders for the role are Olivia Hallinan (Sugar Rush, Lark Rise to Candleford - and pictured right) - not a bad choice in my opinion, as well as Sheridan Smith who can currently be heard as the Eighth Doctor's companion Lucie Miller.

Where it gets interesting however is in the suggestion of older actresses to offset the youthful appearance of Matt Smith - such as Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty), Julia Sawalha (Absolutely Fabulous), Pippa Haywood (Green Wing) and Olivia Colman (Peep Show), not to mention a raft of women who appeared in the 2008 series (Lindsey Coulson, Sarah Lancashire and Lesley Sharp)

We don't actually know the answer, but it's a lot of fun trying to guess.  One thing is likely however - Doctor Who is on TV at Easter, so what better time to announce the arrival of the new companion(s?) to the assembled press in advance of a few weeks rehearsals and shooting from late Spring/early Summer?
